Overview

The Racing Post is one of the most valuable tools for any horse punter, and has been for a number of years now. Their dedication and coverage of the sport is rivalled by very few and the number of both enthusiasts and seasoned professionals they have amongst their rank is superb.

One thing that the company has not been afraid to do is move with the times; this is apparent with the release of the Racing Post app available on the majority of smartphone operating systems. The app has been designed to offers users a mobile version of their ever popular magazine which includes information on a ton of races as well as articles on the industry itself.

Throughout this review we will be looking at how well this app works and more importantly, if it lives up to the fantastic brand that Racing Post have managed to establish over the years.

Features

Unlike many betting related apps, you aren’t greeted with a home page as such from the Racing Post. It sends you straight into a list of the upcoming races for that race for a number of meetings around the world. You can scroll through the list to find the meeting you want or you can sort the list to show a long list of races all in order of their start time. Whilst it works, it does feel a little odd to be honest, not having a ‘home’ page that most would be used to and this format certainly isn’t our favourite type.

Staying with the home page briefly, you have a date in the top left corner so you can sort the races via certain days of the week, a search bar at the top to search for horses, jockeys, trainers and other information. At the bottom of the page is 5 navigation buttons ranging from Cards, Results, News, Live and Account, each of which we will discuss later in the article.

The most important part of the app – for us at least – is the race cards themselves. And boy, are they good! Once you have selected your race you will be greeted with the card, and from there can choose from four options at the top; card, form, tips and live.

The card section gives you run down of each horse in the race. This will include horses name, jockey, trainer, form and RP rating. On top of this you get to see a short excerpt of how the horse might fair in the race and also the latest live odds taken from the William Hill site. Interestingly enough, you can click the odds and be taken to a betting slip within the app to place bets directly with William Hill from the Racing Post app. Neat!

The standout part of this section is the addition of the runner file. You can access this by clicking each horses name and by doing so will be taken to a file containing information on the horse including, trainer form, jockey form, owner, race excerpt, race record (including wins, winnings, OR, TS and RPR), form from all of its past races (including when it ran, conditions, class, result, starting price and RPR), pedigree and even breeding information. This is just staggering stuff and the amount of information is simply remarkable considering it’s coming from a completely free racing app.
Back on the race card is possibly one of the coolest features on the entire app; the predictor. The predictor is exactly what it says on the tin, a predictor for what might happen from that race. Taken into account is things like jockey form, trainer form, horse form, ground, opposition and loads more. It’s the kind of thing that most of the elite horse racing bettors will frown upon, but for the everyday average Joe bettor, this sort of thing is worth its weight in gold. The app will show you which they think will win the race and give guides on by how far rating each and every horse. Plus, it comes complete with a fancy graphic that looks amazing.

The second tab is the Form section of the card. This gives you a more condensed look of the races form over the past four races. Information here includes the date of the race, where they race, length of race, going, type, weight and finishing position. It saves having to load up the runner file really and means you can quickly flick between each horses form from that race.

Racing Post Tips Section

Next up is the handy tipster section. For each race a group of around 14 tipsters taken from a number of sources within racing (newspapers, journalists, ex-professionals, betting blogs etc.) to give their opinion on how the race will unfold, and essentially who to back. Included on this section of the app is a short verdict that will see how the general feel of the race will progress. Key stats from the race are included along with a breakdown of the tips and who’s chosen what. The breakdown is actually an important section for us as we find that many bettors like to follow certain people’s tips. As the Racing Post is so vast these days, it has a number of tipsters working for them, meaning it’s tough to keep on track with who is predicting what. This breakdown allows you to see what each person (or outsource) has chosen.

The live section is the final part of the race card and is pretty simple in what it does. Basically, from the meeting of your race, a reporter who is at that meeting will keep you up to date with results, weather updates, ground updates and whole host of other information relating to that meeting. Think of it like a twitter feed built into the app for the meeting of a specific race.

The results tab at the bottom navigation bar is pretty self-explanatory; it provides results for all races that have been covered by Racing Post. But not only does it give you the name of the horse, position and starting price, it also allows you to click the race to see a quick synopsis of how that race went down. So you could expect to see something along the lines of ‘Prominent, tracked leader halfway, pushed into lead over 1f out, edged left inside final furlong, stayed on well.’ This is provided for each race.

The News section is the next aspect to this app and is very simple. It’s basically a blog of the latest racing news from around the world taken directly from the Racing Posts’ website. The Live section is pretty similar to this, except it’s more of a feed of information that is updated instantly and includes snippets of news. You can also access the William Hill Radio stream from this which loads within the app and can flick between news from certain meetings that you may be interested in.

Finally the accounts section allows you to change a number of features on the app, mainly in how its displayed. This can range from customising your race card, changing number of form lines, runner order, odds displayed, along with information about the app and how you can contact Racing Post.
Verdict

The Racing Post has been the pinnacle of information for all race goers. Over the years meetings around the world would have been full of the Racing Post magazine and newspaper with all the information that they could have possibly ever needed to make and informative bet.

Now it feels like that mantle has changed and all the information is available within this wonderful free horse racing app. As a horse racing fan, it’s been really, really tough to find anything that you could want additionally on their. It literally has just about everything. The only thing you can’t do is stream the race directly from your mobile, but this isn’t really what the Racing Post app is about. It’s about giving you every single possible spec of information to make the most informed decisions of which horse to potentially back, or not.

Overall, the app is pretty much faultless, and once you get over the fact that the home screen, isn’t really a home screen, more a delve straight into the world of horse racing, then we are sure you will find this app pretty much faultless.
